Needle is the basic sewing component. Needle is the carrier of sewing threads. The stitching is done by the help of needle. Various type of needle is used in apparel industry. The selection of needle depends on various factors.

Basic Shapes of Needle Points: Depending on the shapes of needle points, needle is classified as the follow.


  • V – Point/Set Point Needle: This type of needle is used for woven fabric sewing. It is classified as follow.



  1. Slim/Sharp set point

  2. Medium set point

  3. Heavy set point



  • Ball Point Needle: This type of needle is used for knit fabric sewing. This type of needle is classified as follow.



  1. Light ball point needle

  2. Medium ball point needle

  3. Heavy ball point needle


The uses of the needle depend on the end use of the materials. So, select your needle types which you need.

Basic Components Of Garment Sewing

Sewing is a stitching process. By the sewing, two or more fabric parts are joined with one to another. In sewing; fabrics are the basic materials and sewing machine is essential for doing stitching.

sewing machine is used to make design on the fabric. When design is produced by using yarn on the fabric by the sewing operation that is called embroidery fabric. On the other hand, applique fabric is that which is produced separately than attached with the fabric by sewing or adhesive is called applique fabric.



Basic Components of Sewing: The basic components of sewing are given below.


  1. Needle

  2. Feed Dog

  3. Pressure Foot

  4. Throat Plate

  5. Sewing Thread

  6. Fabric


After fabric spreading and cutting, sewing is done. To get better sewing performance once should ensure the quality of each components of sewing. Any types of faulty component could bring defects in apparel which could be the cause of rejection of apparel.

Sewing Thread | Properties Of Sewing Thread

In apparel manufacturing; different types of sewing accessories and finishing accessories are used for sew the fabric. Sewing thread is the principal sewing accessories. Different types of sewing thread are used for t-shirt, polo-shirt, trouser or others garment sewing. A sewing thread should have enough sewability and durability for ensuring the longibility of the apparel. Here, I have written about the properties of sewing thread which should have a sewing thread.



Essential requirements for sewing thread: Sewing thread should fulfill the following requirements. They are as follow:


  • Sewability: This type of properties should have during the sewing of the fabric. How can we measure the sewability of a sewing thread? It is very easy, we can sew 100 yds or meters by the sewing thread, if no breakage that means it has sufficient sewability.



  1. Not breaking when used for high speed sewing.

  2. The thread has to have sufficient surface smoothness.

  3. Thread must have a uniform diameter.



  • Durability: Durability of the sewing thread should be excellent. Durability is measured by considering the following points.



  1. Thread must have sufficient elasticity on seams during wear.

  2. Thread shrinkage should be minimum.

  3. Thread has to maintain its original color after clearing process.


We know that, core spun, cotton and polyester sewing thread are the main sewing thread which is mainly used for sewing. Various types of multi fly sewing thread are produced by the combination of different fibers. I think that also important to improve the properties of sewing thread by research.

So, ensure the properties of sewing thread and get the better sewing efficiency. Otherwise, various types of garment defects could be appearing for the sewing thread.

Types Of Sewing Thread | Properties Of Core Spun, Cotton And Polyester Sewing Thread

Sewing thread is the main elements to make apparel. After cutting the fabrics, different cut parts are joined by sewing. Sewing threads may be made by natural, man-made or combined fibers. Sewing thread is manufactured by the combination of short fibers or by continuous filament yarn. Twisting is done for form a sewing thread. Various types of sewing thread is used for sewing, all of them have their own characteristics which is important to know.



Sewing Thread types: Sewing thread can be classified as the following way. They are as follow:

A) On the basis of fiber types: Cotton, Polyester, Nylon, etc.

B) On the basis of thread construction: 2ply, 3ply, Core spun thread

C) On the basis of finish applied.

Properties of Core spun thread: More than 95% cases 100% spun polyester sewing thread in used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and others country. Properties of core spun thread are as follow:


  1. Strong thread with excellent sewability.

  2. Thread has filament polyester or nylon as a core and cotton is wrapped on it.

  3. Cost more than regular thread.

  4. Have good durability also.


Properties of Cotton sewing thread: Properties of cotton sewing thread are as follow:

  1. Made from cotton fibers.

  2. Have excellent sewability because fibers are not seriously affected by the heat generated by needles during sewing.

  3. Cotton threads are not highly durable and have a tendency to shrink when apparel is washed.

  4. Mercerized cotton threads sew well and have lustures appearance but shrink slightly when wetted.


Properties of Polyester sewing thread: Properties of polyester sewing thread are as follow:

  1. Made from polyester filaments or fibers.

  2. Threads are highly durable and are hot affected in washing or dry-cleaning.

  3. They have excellent dimensional stability.

  4. Also have a high level of resistance to abrasion.


On the basis of finish applied: Sewing thread is classified on the basis of finish applied as the following:

  • Lubricants are commonly used 3% to 15% on the basis of weight.

  • Special finishes are:



  1. Water repellent finish

  2. Flame proof finish

  3. Anti-Bacterial finish

  4. Anti-mildew


Among all of the sewing thread, core spun is widely used in apparel manufacturing process. Before sewing, one should be ensure about the sewability and durability of sewing thread.
