Over edge chain stitch is referred to as “over locking” and as the name implies. Neatening continuous seaming application is formed by this type of over edge chain stitch. It is widely used when at least one or more threads are passed around the fabric edge. They are generally used to seam and neaten the cut edge of the fabric plies. The thread is supplied from large cone for this reason it is possible to produce long stitch. For this reason production is high in this sewing operation.

Important Members Of The Over Edge Chain Stitch: Class 500: Followings are the important members of over edge chain stitch.


  1. Type 501: Single thread over edge.

  2. Type 503: 2 threads over edge.

  3. Type 504: 3 threads over edge.

  4. Type 512: 4 threads over edge.

Pressing or ironing is one of the most important tasks in finishing section. It is done for giving final finishing appearance to the apparel. After that, apparels are ready for packing.

Pressing or Ironing In Finishing Section: Various types of operations are done in finishing section. Pressing is done by the following way.


  • Pressing means shaping the apparels.

  • Pressing is affected by the application of heat and pressure for certain time.

  • Steam, compressed air and suction can assist the process.

  • The setting effect is fixed by cooling.


Pressing Operations: Pressing operations are two types. They are –

Packing is one of the most important parts of apparel manufacturing process. After completing the entire manufacturing task, apparel is required to pack. In finishing section, packing is the last steps before storing. Various types of packing are done and it depends on the type of apparel. After packing, it placed in carton as per instruction. After cartooning, carton is stored in store section. Then carton is delivered from the store for export.

Types of Packing in Finishing Section: Different types of packing are done in finishing section. Followings are the most used packing types.


  1. Stand up pack : Shirt (900 angle)

  2. Flat pack : Sportswear/ shirt/ trouser

  3. Hanger pack : Blazer, coats, pants etc

  4. Semi stand up pack : Shirt

  5. Half fold pack : Pant


Types of Carton Packing: After packing, cartooning is done according to apparel size and color. Most used packing types are given below.

Carton pack may be varying according to the buyer’s requirement. Carton pack may be as –

  • 12 pcs / carton

  • 24 pcs / carton

Features Of Edge Neatening Seam | Apparel Seam

Edge neatening seam is classified as class 6 according to the British standard 3870; 1991. It is one of the important seam types for apparel manufacturing. Generally it is used for lock stitch type sewing machine. It is used in the edge of the fabric.

What Is Seam? || Classification Of Seam

In apparel manufacturing; fabric parts are joined by various stitching. This stitching is done by sewing machine. Specific sewing machine is used for specific stitch formation.

Seam: A stitch line where fabrics are joined together by various fabric arrangements is called a seam. Various types of seam are done in fabric.

Classification of Seam: According to British standard 3870; 1991 seams are classified under eight headings. They are given below.

  3. Class 3: bound seam.

  4. Class 4: Flat seam.

  5. Class 5: Decorative seam.

  6. Class 6: Edge neatening seam.

Sequence Of Thread Path In A Lock Stitch Sewing Machine

In sewing operation; thread is supplied from a thread cone. The cone is hold by a cone or spool holder. From the cone, thread reach into the needle by a thread path. It is important to pass the thread through a right path. Otherwise, sewing operation could be hampered. I have written about the thread path of a lock stitch machine in below.

In sewing, fabric is feed to the needle over the needle plate. Fabric guides allow sewing to proceed more rapidly. Hammers and guides make it easier to feed the material correctly to the needles and to obtain a regular seam line. So, it is important to adjust the fabric guide in right place.
